Remember in February when we reported on a rumor that David Bowie was going to have a small part in a movie named Will? It seems that was true…only the movie has been retitled Bandslam. The movie, starring Gaelan Connell, Alyson Michalka, and (unfortunately) Vanessa Hudgens, tells the story of a band formed by high school outcasts and a popular girl in order to win the battle of the bands at their school. Bowie described his cameo as “a ten second scene of absolute silence.” So, it doesn’t sound like the kind of movie I will sit through just for a glimpse of Bowie, but I might check it out from the local library and fast-forward to his scene.
It’s not the first major celebrity cameo I’ve heard of, but it seems rather disconnected – at least with, say, Stan Lee, you could argue that he’s obviously getting cameo roles in Marvel flicks because he’s actually the creator of the characters involved, from Spider-Man to The Fantastic Four. With Bowie, it’s like Mr. T getting a cameo in a film about a partypoker tournament. It’s entertaining enough, but you’re still left wondering exactly what the man was doing in that particular picture.

If I recollect from “The Man Who Fell To Earth” he does the ten-seconds-of-silence thing rather well. He’s mostly reacting in “Zoolander” as well, and it’s the best thing in the movie.
Funny, though, I’m basically making that movie only it’s The Chipmunks and we’re drawing it on Post-its. And I’m terrified that they’ll cast Bowie in it. And that he’d do it.
I hope someone asks him! That would be awesome.
Oh, no! It’s going to be awful! Aaagh! It’s got The Chipettes in it! The pleasure of seeing him would be corrupted by the context…trust me.
